How Artie compares
Compare Artie vs. AWS DMS, Fivetran, Fivetran HVR, Qlik Replicate, Debezium, and Confluent for real-time CDC.
Compare Artie with
| Factor | AWS DMS | |
|---|---|---|
| Built for | Database migrations, with ongoing replication as an option | Real-time data replication |
| Architecture | For Snowflake: DMS task, then S3, then Snowpipe or a custom MERGE | Durable streaming on a Kafka-backed log |
| Schema evolution | DDL support varies by source and target; S3-staged loads need your own schema handling | New columns added automatically; column drops opt-in, after a 4-hour safety check |
| Backfill behavior | Table reloads re-run a full load through the task; large tables can take hours or days | Online, parallel with CDC, replica-aware – your source stays live |
| Observability | Stitched together: CloudWatch + S3 inspection + warehouse logs | Per-table lag, throughput, and alerts via Datadog, Grafana, or PagerDuty |
| Deployment options | AWS only | Cloud on every plan; BYOC on Enterprise |

Frequently asked questions
Is Artie a direct replacement for Fivetran?
For database CDC, Artie is a direct replacement. Teams have fully switched their Postgres, MySQL, MongoDB, and other pipelines from Fivetran to Artie for lower latency, better reliability, and predictable pricing. Artie writes to the same warehouse you're using today (Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, Databricks, and more; Iceberg on Enterprise), and you can move your dbt models and dashboards over one at a time, onto fresher data.
Is Artie a direct replacement for Fivetran HVR?
For supported database-to-warehouse and database-to-lake pipelines, yes. Artie replaces the HVR operating model with a fully managed CDC product. HVR can remain the right tool for active/active, bidirectional, multi-directional, file-replication, and other operational-replication use cases outside Artie's supported scope.
Is Artie a direct replacement for Qlik Replicate?
For supported database-to-warehouse and database-to-lake pipelines, yes. Artie replaces the Replicate operating model with a fully managed CDC product. Qlik Replicate can remain the right tool for bidirectional synchronization, mainframe sources like IMS, VSAM, and Db2 for z/OS, file replication, and other operational-replication use cases outside Artie's supported scope.
Isn't AWS DMS managed already?
DMS manages the capture task. For warehouses DMS can't write to directly, like Snowflake, everything around it – S3 staging, MERGE logic, monitoring, recovery – is yours. Artie owns the full pipeline end-to-end: capture, buffering, schema handling, merge, observability, and alerting. The operational burden doesn't disappear with DMS; it just moves into your team.
We've already invested in Kafka. Does that work with Artie?
Yes. You don't need to rip out Kafka. Most teams keep Kafka running for non-CDC streaming workloads (events, application logs, internal pub/sub) and let Artie own the database replication path with its own managed durable streaming layer underneath. You stop paying the operational cost of Kafka for CDC specifically, while keeping the rest of your streaming investment intact.
We use Kafka for our microservices. Can we keep that and just move the CDC pipeline to Artie?
Yes. Most teams keep Confluent for what it's best at (app event streaming, stream processing, multi-consumer fan-out) and move only the database-fed pipelines to Artie. The two run side by side without conflict, and you stop paying Confluent for the slice they're not the best fit for.
Will switching tools break our dbt models, dashboards, or BI tools?
Not if you plan the cutover. Artie writes to a separate set of tables in your existing warehouse, and you can set destination table names to match. Point one model at Artie tables, validate it, then move the rest.
We're in a regulated industry. Does Artie support HIPAA or BYOC?
Yes. Artie is SOC 2 Type II on every plan. HIPAA is available on Growth with a signed BAA and included on Enterprise. BYOC deployments are available on Enterprise – same product, same UX, running in your network. Column-level PII controls are built in across all plans.
