Use a more memory-efficient buffering path by default

performance

Use column-block row buffering by default, with an explicit per-topic fallback.

Artie’s row buffering previously used a row-oriented representation by default, even when the column-oriented buffer was available for a topic.

Artie now enables column-block row buffering by default. Teams that need the previous per-row behavior can set disableColumnBuffer: true on a topic and restart Transfer; the previous useColumnBuffer setting is replaced by this opt-out.

This is for teams running Transfer topics that want the column-buffered path as the standard behavior while retaining an explicit fallback.

Why this matters

  • Use column-block buffering by default for every topic
  • Retain a per-topic fallback when the legacy row-oriented behavior is needed
  • Make the active buffering choice explicit in topic configuration
